Cooling the Lava- II
Described by Katelyn Clews
This article seems to be about the conflit between man and nature. How sometimes no matter how much we try to manipulate
things to make life easier and better for ourselves, nature sometimes fights back and gets its way. This article is about how
distructive volcanos can be, but even with massive distruction, and terrible outcomes, this is just they way the world works.
Sometimes nature takes its toll on us, and isnt affected by humanity, things like a voncano cant really be dispruped as easily as
other things. Again McPhee is taking things that arent common to everyday like, obviously we dont hear about volcanos every day
on the news, so it interesting to read some factual information about them. McPhee has a way of finding material to grab the
interest of his readers.
Garett also mentioned in his description of this article that McPhee puts in facts that go right over your head, the ones that you can
only comprehend if you look them up from another sourse. I dont think its McPhees goal to confuse his readers, but more so make
them become aware of the knowledge in the world that we had no idea was out there. If McPhee used nothing but basic facts that
we already knew, what would be the point in writing? I think his writing is a way to get these facts, whether they be important
issues, or just things that would be cool to know. Either way he does a good job informing his readers about what is going on in the
world that we had no idea existed.
